Description: Acadia University is one of Canada's oldest and most distinguished universities, and has a long tradition of offering accessible education dating back to its beginnings in 1838. Its founders believed in the principle of equal access. Acadia was the first university in Nova Scotia to offer educational opportunities to students regardless of religious denomination, and in 1884 became only the second institution in Canada to graduate a woman, Dr. Clara Bell Marshall. Most importantly, over its 150 year history, Acadia has earned a widespread reputation for academic excellence as it has pursued the goals of accessibility. Acadia stands firm in its commitment to a liberal education with all degree programs requiring courses from both arts and science. More than 200 different curriculum combinations are available to students. Acadia maintains an enrolment of about 3500 full time students, ten percent of which are international students. An additional 1000 students access the resources of the university through distance education programs.
