Today, its internationally recognized programs encompass the areas of engineering, computer science, technology, science, liberal arts, fine arts and public and private management. Carnegie Mellon's Computer Science Department was started in 1965 by Herbert Simon, Allen Newell, and Alan Perlis, who was the first head.
