When we opened our doors in 1987, we offered just one career training course: our Professional Real Estate Appraisal Program. Interest quickly grew, and we gradually expanded our course offerings. Description: In response to the enormous suffering experienced in Northeastern Nova Scotia during the
Depression, St. Francis Xavier University created its Extension Department. As an integral part of
the University, its purpose was to help people, in the communities served by the University, find
solutions to shared problems. Extension did this through ethical reflection, adult education, group
action, co-operative values and principles, and field staff with an abiding faith in the people. It
offered people and communities a self-help alternative to the depression. The result was the
creation of networks of co-operatives and credit unions and other community organizations.
