Description: Founded in 1885, Goucher College has a tradition of excellence and
innovation in education and a firm commitment to the liberal arts and
sciences. Goucher began as an institution of higher education for women
and was originally named the Woman's College of Baltimore City. The
college's first location was in downtown Baltimore on land deeded to
the Baltimore Confrence of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the
establishment of the college by the Reverend John Franklin Goucher. In
1910, the college's name was changed to honor Dr. Goucher, who was also
its second president.

Description: The Center for Distance Education offers several options to students
who need to fit coursework into their busy schedules. Our Independent
Study Department is ranked as one of the largest university
correspondence programs in the U.S. and serves the learning needs of
some 4,000 students each year. Independent Study offers college level
and high school level courses. You can also take advantage of testing
options and earn credit through advanced standing examinations such as
the College Level Examination Program, and the Proficiency Examination
Program.
