Description: Founded in 1913, the Philosophical Society of England was originally
formed 'to promote the study of practical philosophy among the general
public'. Our well established Associate and Fellowship Diplomas in
philosophy based around an individually devised plan of study have now
been combined with the Pathways to Philosophy Distance Learning
Programme based at the University of Sheffield. Pathways is aimed at
students thinking of doing a university degree in philosophy, as well
as those who simply want to deepen their interest in the subject. There
are six self-contained Pathways programmes, on the philosophy of mind,
the Presocratic philosophers, the philosophy of language, ethics,
metaphysics, as well as an introduction based around dialogues and
science fiction short stories. Each course represents an original
philosophical investigation rather than a survey, and is designed to be
accessible to beginners, while being sufficiently challenging to hold
the interest of philosophy graduates. Feedback is intensive. Typically,
a student completing one of the six fifteen-unit programmes will have
received 20,000 words of comments and criticisms on their work. It
follows that such a high level of commitment makes considerable demands
on both students and tutors. Our aim is not to make philosophy 'easy',
but rather to generate excitement about the subject and its
possibilities, and to get the student to 'see things differently'.
