innovation in education and a firm commitment to the liberal arts and
sciences. Goucher began as an institution of higher education for women
and was originally named the Woman's College of Baltimore City. The
college's first location was in downtown Baltimore on land deeded to
the Baltimore Confrence of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the
establishment of the college by the Reverend John Franklin Goucher. In
1910, the college's name was changed to honor Dr. Goucher, who was also
its second president.
